Community Profile

Defining a community is a challenging task. Definitions, or profiles as we propose to call it, mixes a bit of the past, with the current condition, and aspirations for the future.  With this past, present and future perspective in mind, it is easy to see the importance of organizing information regarding a community profile.  Sarasota's community profile has three organizing categories: Community Indicators, Trends and Pressure Points, and Strategic Focus Areas.

There are a broad range of community indicators that can be gathered from various independent entities. The United States Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and State agencies are all sources of community indicators. In addition, local study groups are a great source of data identification and analysis. Information gathered under community indicators has been put together by a Sarasota-based group called SCOPE (an acronym for Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence).

The information contained in trends and pressure points has been gathered together from various workshops over the last five years, and assist us in framing future probabilities and possibilities.

Strategic focus areas identify important community issues where we need to collectively focus our resources. These focus areas developed through Board commitment to community engagement and represent a synthesis of thousands of conversations.
